Echoic Control (i.e., Copying)
The echoic is a form of intraverbal behavior that resembles the source of control. For instance, upon hearing Fire! the speaker may also shout Fire! To assess echoic control, ensure the target item is not present, and that access to it is not restricted. The name of the item, but nothing else about the item is stated by the assessor.
Objective: To assess the extent to which imitative verbal stimuli control the speaker’s verbal behavior.
Materials: Alternate activity that does not involve referent objects.
Method: Discrete Trial Training
Intertrial Interval: 20 to 30-sec
R/O: tact, mand, and sequelic function

Procedures:
Ensure referent objects are removed from the assessment area.
Engage the participant in alternate activity with token reinforcement.
Provide imitative stimuli, with or without “Say, ….”
Reinforce responding

Resume alternate activity.
